Hello Team D21-33, 'Nice to meet you'. This is Vas - I have been assigned as a mentor for this Designathlon. Very topical idea, well done. I believe the brief/proposal should be very specific on the idea/task you guys are about to develop. The first sentence mentions incentives for companies to work for people and the planet. I believe you would need to focus on a single and very specific target. Ideas No.1 - having a international standard for putting the CO2 footprint on all products (like calories on food) Comments This is a great idea that will definitely help the fight with climate change. However, since I believe this is an engineering competition, I would try to apply this great idea in engineering e.g. what is the CO2 footprint of the materials used for the construction of bridges, roads etc. and what would be the optimal selection of materials based on minimization of CO2 emissions. This could be applied on a more commercial aspect and be used by engineering and construction companies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No.2 - Auditing companies for sustainability, almost like an award system (think TEF but for companies), it would encourage companies to improve as users would prefer a more sustainable brand Comments Nice idea. This is a generic idea. Again, you guys need to be specific on what you would audit for. What TEF stands for? Teaching Excellence Framework? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ No.3 - A CAD analysis that incorporated sustainability info, it would encourage design engineers to rethink designs that fail due to sustainability Comments This sounds like a very good idea. I would try to combine with Idea No.1. AutoCAD could provide all the design elements of a structure. Each element could be assigned a value of CO2 footprint and when the design is complete a total of CO2 footprint could be provided and compared with other design options, assuming safety, buildability and reasonable costs. Well done guys!! Great ideas that will definitely contribute to sustainability and the engineering industry. For any questions, feel free to reach out at vasilistsigkakos@gmail.com. We could potentially have a 15mins Skype sessions to define the problem statements, the goals and objectives as well as the success tracking of the selected idea. Regards, Vas
